The O'Jays

With the recent CD reissue of their back catalogue, one of the most popular acts on R&B radio is finally getting some payback. Having their hit song "Love Train" used for a popular commercial didn't hurt any either. Along with , Archie Bell & the Drells, Wilson Picket, Billy "Mrs. Jones" Paul and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the O'Jays helped define the early '70s Philly Sound. Recent R&B smoothies D'Angelo and Maxwell have paid tribute to this style--a smooth blend between late '60s Temptations-style up-tempo harmonies and '70s-style slow jams which became the soundtrack to 101 mood-light late nights. Smooth.
