.38 Special
Over 20 Years ago, a group of extremely talented young men got together
to begin rehearsing for what would turn out to be one of the best bands to come out of the deep south. While rehearsing in an old abandoned warehouse one day, they heard the sound of sirens. Before they knew what was going on the doors flew open and the cops came crashing in. They thought that some type of orgy or drug party was going on there. They had their guns drawn, and were saying that their .38 Specials would do the talking...Thus the name for their band was created.
The band is lead by lead singer Donnie Van Zant and singer/guitarist Don Barnes. Donnie is the brother of Ronnie Van Zant, the late leader of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He is also the brother of Johnny Van Zant who is the current lead singer for Skynyrd. (Obviously a VERY talented family.)
Their debut album, 38 Special was released in 1977 and nine others have![]()
followed since, three of which have gone Platinum. They have had multiple singles in the top-ten including "Hold on Loosely" and "Caught Up In You".
In addition to Van Zant and Barnes, the current line-up includes original member Larry Junstrom on bass (Larry was also one of the original founders of Lynyrd Skynyrd) and guitarist Danny Chauncey. Rounding out the band is drummer Gary Moffatt and keyboardist Bobby Capps.
